Deputy PM advises Phongsaly to stop deforestation

Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad has directed Phongsaly provincial authorities to crack down on deforestation and to stop granting large land concessions to foreign investors. Mr Somsavat issued the advice while on a recent visit to Phongsaly province, saying the authorities need to bring an end to the establishment of rubber plantations after it was found the area under cultivation has risen to 17,000 hectares.

Laos officially joins World Trade Organisation

Laos has become the last of the 10 member Association of Southeast Asian nations to join the World Trade Organisation. The communist government has implemented a series of market reforms to qualify for membership in the hope of encouraging foreign investment from a wider variety of countries. The economy of Laos is small and almost entirely dependent on trade with its more powerful neighbours, China, Thailand and Vietnam. Fifteen years after it first sought membership of the global trade mediator, Laos finally wrapped up negotiations late last year.
