Laos to mark World Environment Day

Laos will join the global community to observe the World Environment Day on June 5, aiming to promote awareness of the importance of preserving our biodiversity and the need to identify problems related to the environment. The celebration takes place as the world is trying to tackle numerous environmental challenges including climate change, global warming, disasters, environmental governance, ecosystem management and resource efficiency.

New report on land and forest “grabs” in Cambodia and Laos

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Deutsche Bank are financing Vietnamese rubber companies driving a wave of land and forest “grabs” in Cambodia and Laos, according to a new report and film by Global Witness.

The report, “Rubber Barons”, reveals how a pervasive culture of secrecy around plantation investments in the region has allowed two of Vietnam’s largest companies, Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) and the state-owned Vietnam Rubber Group (VRG), to acquire more than 200,000 hectares of land through a series of deals with the Lao and Cambodian governments that lack transparency.

Laos officially joins World Trade Organisation

Laos has become the last of the 10 member Association of Southeast Asian nations to join the World Trade Organisation. The communist government has implemented a series of market reforms to qualify for membership in the hope of encouraging foreign investment from a wider variety of countries. The economy of Laos is small and almost entirely dependent on trade with its more powerful neighbours, China, Thailand and Vietnam. Fifteen years after it first sought membership of the global trade mediator, Laos finally wrapped up negotiations late last year.

Land grab’ as families are uprooted to make way for luxury resort that will host EU ministers

At least 500 people have been uprooted from their homes to make way for luxury villas where European Union foreign ministers, including William Hague, will stay during a summit in Laos on Monday. The “Asia-Europe Meeting” will bring together 48 EU and Asian countries on Don Chan island in the centre of Laos’s capital, Vientiane. To allow the construction of 50 villas and two conference centres, the authorities have moved 102 families who once lived on the island and worked its green paddy fields. The new facilities will be used for this and future summits.

Asia-Europe People’s Forum concludes with declaration focusing on sustainable development

Vientiane – The 9th Asia-Europe People’s Forum (AEPF-9) concluded here on Friday with a final declaration ratified by all participants. The declaration emphasized the participants concerns in four major areas, including universal social protection and access to essential services. At the closing session of the meeting, Maris Dela Cruz, member of the International Organization Committee of AEPF, said the participates to the meeting engaged in an in-depth discussion from different perspectives in the last three days, in order to come up with people’s vision and recommendations on people’s solidarity against poverty and sustainable development.

Low rubber revenues in Luang Namtha hurting local farmers

Luang Namtha provincial authorities are tackling the issue of falling rubber prices after growers have been hit by consistently low prices for several months this year. A decline in the rubber price on the world market and an oversupply of raw rubber in Luang Namtha has seen traders offering considerably lower prices than usual, according to the provincial Industry and Commerce Department.

Laos shares land and forestry management goals

To manage these natural resources sustainably and for the benefit of all Lao people, the country should have suitable policies and good mechanisms for implementation, Vice President of the National Assembly, Dr Xaysomphone Phomvihane said at the workshop on land and forestry tenure reform in Vientiane yesterday.

VN company plants rubber trees in northern Laos

Dien Bien Rubber JSC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Lao government to study the feasibility of a rubber plantation project in Muong Hun and Muong Beng districts of the northern Laos province of Udomsay. The MoU was agreed to by the company’s General Director Nguyen Hong Thang and Lao Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Bounthavy Sisouphanthong, in Vientiane on May 25. Covering an area of 1,000 hectares, this is Vietnam ’s first rubber planting project in Northern Laos , Thang said.
The project is expected to contribute to changing farming methods, creating stable jobs for local people and promoting cooperation between Vietnam and Laos and Dien Bien Phu and Udomsay in particular, he said.
On behalf of the Lao Government, Bounthavy Sisouphanthong praised the company as the first Vietnamese business to grow rubber trees in Northern Laos , despite a range of difficulties, especially in infrastructure. He pledged that the Lao Government will create favorable conditions for the company to ensure the project’s progress, contributing to consolidating the friendship and special solidarity between the two countries.-VNA
