Timber smuggling to Vietnam continues

More and more wood is being smuggled across the border from Laos and Cambodia to the southwestern boundary of Vietnam, according to a Vietnamese media report on Thursday. Vietnamese smuggling prevention agencies were quoted in the VietNamNet online newspaper as saying they had discovered many consignments of wood illegally imported from the two countries.

Eight trucks caught in Vietnam with suspected smuggled timber

Vietnamese traffic police in the central province of Nghe An have confiscated eight Lao-registered trucks allegedly laden with smuggled timber, Vietnam’s local media reported. The fleet was found parked on the roadside on National Highway 7 in Nghe An’s Chuong Duong district on April 7, Vietnam Breaking News reported on Saturday citing the Kien Thuc news website.

Illegal timber trade tops 2014 economic police cases

The illegal trade in timber topped all cases uncovered in 2014 by the economic police or police in charge of economic-case affairs, an official report showed. In 2014, the economic police registered 391 illegal cases nationwide including 169 that involved the illegal trade of timber, which made it top of the list. Fraud in relation to citizens’ assets was the runner up with 124 cases recorded over the year, according to a local newspaper published by the Ministry of Public Security.  The 391 total saw a drop of 36 compared to the total cases registered in 2013, according to the newspaper, citing a report presented at the annual meeting of the economic police held last week.

Public urged to help identify illegal loggers

Accurate information and evidence are essential for bringing to justice illegal loggers and wood traders, and forestry authorities are calling on the public to help in this matter. Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s Department of Forest Inspection, Mr Paphakone Vongxay, recently called for public support when responding to questions on illegal logging put to the National Assembly through telephone hotline calls.
