Villagers occupy forest area illegally

More than 20 hectares of forest area along a newly-constructed road that links Vangvieng to Meuangfeuang districts in Vientiane province have been occupied by villagers – an action that contravenes regulations, a senior government official has said. Some 49 families of Phonxay and Naxay villages have cleared forest in Naxay village along the new road to resettle themselves, said Deputy Director General of the Forest Inspection Department, Mr Paphakon Vongxay.

Protect forests, DPM tells Xayaboury officials

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of social and cultural affairs, Mr Asang Laoly, has asked Xayaboury provincial authorities to suppress any activity that harms or degrades protected and preserved forest areas.

The deputy prime minister’s instruction was the latest made to the province after a report emerged that forests there had been degraded by illegal logging over many years. During an earlier visit to Xayaboury, Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong also asked local authorities to focus on reforestation after learning forested areas had dwindled due to illegal logging and slash and burn cultivation.Mr Asang, on a working visit to the northern province from September 22-23, told provincial and district authorities to take positive action to thoroughly investigate and address issues regarding logging, according to official sources from the Government Office.

Laos shares land and forestry management goals

Land and forestry is the primary resource of the nation, and needs to be managed properly in order to improve local people’s living conditions and further socio-economic development in Laos. To manage these natural resources sustainably and for the benefit of all Lao people, the country should have suitable policies and good mechanisms for implementation, Vice President of the National Assembly, Dr Xaysomphone Phomvihane said at the workshop on land and forestry tenure reform in Vientiane yesterday.
