FLEGT to improve wood processing health and safety

The work performance and protection of workers will soon be upgraded in the wood processing sector with a one-year project known as “Improving Occupational Safety and Health at Wood Processing Sector and Timber Legality Definition”. The project will be led by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare at the end of 2015 in the framework of the FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade) initiative it was announced at a recent meeting in Vientiane. The meeting brought together 40 key participants from relevant departments from line ministries, Lao Federation of Trade Unions, Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Lao Furniture Association, Lao Timber Processing Industry Association, other private sector and relevant agencies to gain an understanding of the contents and objectives of the project.

Food security project results in improved local livelihoods

A five-year food security development project which recently ended has built up sustainable ways of making a living for local people in the Nhot-ou district of northern Phongsaly province, officials in charge of the project have concluded. Around 10,000 people in 39 villages have benefited directly from the 1.5 million euro project, which introduced activities to help local people make a living in sustainable ways. Linking Agriculture, Natural Resources Management and Nutrition (LANN), community-based trainings had been organised, according to a press release from the project. The LANN trainings combined with health and sanitation awareness raising campaigns to fight against preventable diseases, latrine construction and interventions in nutrition-sensitive agriculture such as home gardens, fruit trees and fish farming have enabled communities, women in particular, to improve their food security and nutrition strategies.

Certified timber legality on way for wood industries

The Department of Forest Inspection, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), and the European Union (EU) recently held talks on the process of defining timber legality under the FLEGT process. The Lao government has entered into a Voluntary Partnership Agreement for FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade), with the latest talks centring on certifying timber legality to ensure a sustainable supply of raw materials for the wood industries as well as promoting sustainable forest management.
