Attapeu unearths huge stash of buried illegal logs

Authorities in Attapeu province have uncovered 180 cubic metres of illegal logs, which were buried underground, local media reported.
The discovery came after authorities carried out an inspection along the Lao-Vietnam border at the 766th and 770th border markers in the southern province, Attapeu Online, published by the provincial Administrative Office, reported yesterday.
The provincial administration has formed two task force teams to carry out the inspection along the border as well as in the Vang Tud and Nongkai-Ork mining project areas, a provincial official involved in the inspection affairs told Vientiane Times yesterday.

Location: Based in Vientiane
Volunteer Period: October 2017 to March 2018 (from 4 to 6 months duration). This can be a part-time volunteering (replacement of maternity leaves).
Tasks: He/She represents the network at various meetings and events, implements activities in a timely manner and within budget parameters according to the strategy and work plan, and acts as a facilitator that brings members and other stakeholders together.

Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith has directed the leadership of Xieng Khuang province to intensify the fight against corruption, illegal logging and drug smuggling.

The premier issued the directive during talks with top provincial officials on Wednesday as part of his two-day working tour to the northern province.

�The Prime Minister underlined the need to pay more attention to addressing illicit drug smuggling, illegal logging and corruption,� the Deputy Head of the provincial Administrative Office, Mr Viengthong Bounthaphone, told Vientiane Times .

Plans gather steam for railway linking Vientiane to Vietnamese seaport

Regional experts mull solutions to land governance challenges

Experts are seeking to design innovative solutions to land-related challenges in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam by discussing the experiences of the four Mekong countries. More than 80 people representing over 30 organisations from six countries in South East Asia are taking part in a regional stakeholders’ consultation workshop in Vientiane from February 23-24. The meeting is considering coordinated responses and priority areas for joint collaboration on issues of land governance.

Overloaded trucks fined 161m in Vietnam

Twenty five overloaded trucks carrying timber from Laos into Vietnam have been fined a total of VND430 million (more than 161 million kip) after an eight-day inspection at weigh stations in Vietnam’s Nghe An Province, local media reported. The trucks, among the 200 that were checked, were reportedly carrying from five to 30 percent more than allowed capacity during April 8 – 15, the Vietnam Net reported last week. Local Deputy Chief Transport Inspector Phan Huy Chuong told the Vietnam Net that the trucks underwent checks on National Highway 7 when travelling to the province from the Nam Can border crossing.

Eight trucks caught in Vietnam with suspected smuggled timber

Vietnamese traffic police in the central province of Nghe An have confiscated eight Lao-registered trucks allegedly laden with smuggled timber, Vietnam’s local media reported. The fleet was found parked on the roadside on National Highway 7 in Nghe An’s Chuong Duong district on April 7, Vietnam Breaking News reported on Saturday citing the Kien Thuc news website.
