The government has added eight more provinces to its list of main rice bowls in the country increasing rice farmland to 800,000 ha from previously 600,000 ha. With the addition of eight provinces to the list of main rice bowls by the government, there are 10 provinces across the country where rice farming is a priority. These include Khammuan, Savannakhet , Saravan, Champassak, Borikhamxay, Vientiane, Vientiane Capital, Bokeo, Xayaboury and Luang Namtha.
The increase of rice farmland is to ensure the national rice productivity is 3.1 million tonnes so that the country has enough rice for domestic consumption and export, the cabinet meeting was told last week. Across the country, the agriculture area is estimated at 4.5 million ha, representing 19 per cent of the entire land area. However, the farmland where farming is actually practiced is estimated at 2 million ha.
At the last week’s meeting, cabinet members urged the increasing of rice productivity through promoting the use of agricultural machinery, organic fertilizers and increasing the number of model farming families.
